The journalists' crisis cell requests the Ministry of Health to include front-line media representatives in the category of people eligible for immunization in the second stage of vaccination

22 March 2021

The journalists' crisis cell, launched by the Center for Independent Journalism in order to defend the rights and legitimate interests of media representatives during the pandemic crisis, requests the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection (MSMPS) to include media representatives from the front line and the employees of the newsrooms who are in direct contact with them in the category of people who will benefit from the anti-COVID-19 vaccine in the second stage of immunization. We remind you that, in the official response provided by the ministry on February 12, 2021, Tatiana Zatîc, the secretary of state within the MSMPS, communicated that media representatives will be able to be immunized against COVID-19 along with the employees of the maintenance and insurance structures of public order, defense and security of the state. However, according to Annex no. 2 to MSMPS Order no. 93 of February 5, 2021, journalists are not among the priority groups eligible for vaccination in the second stage. We bring to the attention of the authority empowered with the prerogative of determining the beneficiary groups of the vaccine that the activity carried out by some employees in the media field (such as cameramen, photographers, reporters who document journalistic materials in the field, moderators of shows, etc.) involves an increased risk of exposure to the infection with COVID-19. Therefore, aware of the importance of the media's mission in informing citizens about issues of public interest, as well as the substantial contribution of the media to minimizing the impact of the crisis generated by COVID-19 through the correct and equidistant presentation of the facts, we consider it imperative to ensure immunization at the stage of II of the vaccination of front-line journalists and employees in newsrooms who are in direct contact with them. We express our hope that the MSMPS, guided by the general principles set forth in the General Anti-COVID-19 Immunization Plan, as well as the epidemiological, medical and ethical criteria stipulated in the act approved by the Extraordinary National Public Health Commission, will reexamine the categories of persons eligible for priority vaccination. Subsequently, the Journalists' Crisis Cell, on behalf of several media organizations and journalists, requests the MSMPS to include in the category of people eligible for vaccination in stage II media personnel who carry out activities with a high risk of exposure to infection with COVID-19.
